Dental Crowns in Rutherford, NJ

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain and zirconium are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth.

When it comes to restoring your smile, modern advances in cosmetic and restorative dentistry have made treatments stronger, longer-lasting, and more beautiful. Among improvements in materials used in dental restorations are e.max® ceramics for correcting tooth decay, cracked and chipped teeth, or even uneven tooth size and shape. Dr. Lee T. Frost uses this e.max® material at his Rutherford cosmetic dental office to help patients enjoy lasting and beautifully restored smiles.

What is e.max® and Why Do We Use It?

Lithium disilicate ceramic, or e.max®, is a glass-ceramic combination that is sought-after for its durability in crown restorations. Our Rutherford cosmetic and restorative dentist, Dr. Lee T. Frost, uses e.max® to benefit patient treatment plans in the following ways:

Increased Strength - Typically, crowns are made to be more aesthetically pleasing by adding an overlay of tooth-colored material on top of a base of metal or another type of ceramic. Where these two parts of the restoration meet can be a weak point, causing aesthetic issues later. But e.max® crowns are directly blended with tooth-colored materials in the fabrication process, so there is no separate overlay needed to allow your new tooth to look as natural as possible. The result is a stronger restoration – up to three times more -- that stands up well to wear and tear over time.

Conservative Preparation Processes - Offering a higher level of durability means that e.max® crowns can be made to be slightly thinner, or less bulky, than other crowns, without increased risk of chipping or breakage. Thinner restorations require less preparation of existing tooth enamel, saving more of your natural tooth structure in the end.

Stunning Aesthetics - e.max® offers superior aesthetic quality for dental restorations that are opaque and transparent in the right places to truly look like your own teeth. e.max® crowns have a history of providing better natural color matching than other aesthetic materials typically used in dental restorations.

In addition to providing the above benefits, e.max® ceramic dental crowns prove to be an affordable choice for aesthetic smile reconstruction. While many patients choose porcelain-over-metal crowns due to cost concerns, e.max® restorations present other options for cost-effective and beautiful care that is long-lasting.

e.max® is ideal for restoration of single teeth with dental crowns, but can also be used for more comprehensive restorations depending on your needs and goals. Dr. Lee T. Frost can use e.max® ceramic in any of the following dental restorations:

  • Veneers
  • Inlays and onlays
  • Three unit dental bridges

Because of the unique fabrication process involved in producing e.max® restorations, veneers can be made to be ultra-thin and durable, requiring either no or minimal tooth preparation. While e.max® can be used for standard dental bridges to replace one missing tooth, it can also be coupled with zirconia for larger, multiple unit bridges to replace a greater number of missing teeth. e.max® restorations at our Rutherford dental office provide flexible and long-lasting care for patients whose smiles need corrective treatment.

What does getting a crown involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
